Blackburn's Church of England cathedral, hosting weekly organ recitals, classical and popular concerts, conferences and private hire alongside regular worship.
Blackburn Cathedral (formally the Cathedral Church of St Mary the Virgin and St Paul) is the Church of England cathedral for the Diocese of Blackburn, raised to cathedral status in 1926. It stands on Cathedral Close in the city centre.
Alongside daily worship, the Cathedral hosts a busy concert and events programme: classical and popular music concerts, theatre and panel discussions, exhibitions, and weekly free lunchtime organ recitals (Wednesdays, 12:15-1pm, suggested £5 donation) on its Walker/Wood organ. It maintains seven choirs, from children's choirs through to a men's choir and a Renaissance/Bach choir, under the Organist and Director of Music.
The Cathedral is available for daytime and evening hire for conferences, exhibitions, award ceremonies, formal dinners and celebrations, subject to the pattern of worship and other Cathedral activities. Hireable spaces include the main Cathedral, the recently refurbished Crypt (including the Builder's Yard), meeting and conference rooms in the Cathedral Court complex, the Temple Gallery, and the cloister gardens. Checks and Greys, the Cathedral's own contemporary cafe-bar, seats 60 or more and is available for private hire from 4:30pm.
