About this venue
The E-WERK Freiburg occupies a former electricity works on Eschholzstraße in the Stühlinger district and is run by the E-WERK Freiburg e.V. as a socio-cultural centre. It hosts around 400 events a year: productions by independent theatre and dance companies, rock and pop concerts, smaller world music, jazz, classical and new music concerts, cabaret, comedy, readings and exhibitions, with intercultural work and cultural education as particular focuses. The Jazzfestival Freiburg is curated each September together with the Jazzhaus Freiburg, and the frame-drum festival Tamburi Mundi takes place here each spring. 2026 marks thirty years of socio-cultural programming in the building.
The main Saal is set up as a concert stage with a seating grandstand for 390, as a standing concert hall for 700, or as a dance and theatre stage with a grandstand for 244; there is also a smaller Kammertheater. The building houses about 30 artists' studios, a dance centre, a drama school and jazz and rock schools. The association also runs the SÜDUFER stage at Haslacher Straße 41. The house describes itself as largely barrier-free; parking on site is limited.
