About this venue
GL1 is Gloucester's main leisure centre on Bruton Way, a short walk from the railway station. It has a gym, swimming pool, sports hall, indoor bowling area and café, and is operated by Freedom Leisure. The centre closed in September 2023 when its previous operator was wound up, and later reopened under Freedom Leisure, which runs it under a contract with Gloucester City Council. A refurbishment project is under way, so some facilities may be affected.
GL1 is also hired out as an event venue. The main sports hall has retractable seating for 750 or a standing capacity of 1,500, and the main pool has seating for 600. A green room, licensed bar and catering options are available. Events held there include dance and gymnastics competitions, wrestling and boxing, trade shows, comic cons, presentation evenings, martial arts and swim galas.
