About this venue
Horse Guards Parade is a large parade ground off Whitehall, beside St James's Park, used for reviews, parades and ceremonies since the seventeenth century. It is the site of the annual Trooping the Colour, which marks the monarch's official birthday, and of Beating Retreat.
The ground has no permanent seating: events are staged with temporary grandstands built for the occasion, which is why its capacity varies widely — around 7,500 ticketed spectators for Trooping the Colour, and 15,000 for the two-tier, floodlit arena built for the London Polo Championships in 2009. It has also been used for large one-off sporting and cultural events.
