About this venue
The INTERIM is the Staatstheater Kassel's replacement venue during the renovation of its opera house on Friedrichsplatz. Built from a steel frame in about 13 months on a former military site near the Auestadion, it opened on 31 October 2025 with Verdi's "Aida". Container buildings around the hall hold dressing rooms, workshops, offices and the ticket shop.
The hall holds up to 850 people and is surrounded by a four-storey, 10 m high gallery that can serve as audience tier, acting area, technical and lighting gallery or projection surface. An 18 m heavy-duty revolve can also seat audience, and the seating can be rearranged from a classic proscenium layout to theatre in the round or facing tiers. The INTERIM mainly presents opera from the 19th to the 21st century, along with musicals, dance evenings and drama.
There is level, barrier-free access with wheelchair spaces and accessible toilets, though gallery levels 1 to 3 and the raked stand are not barrier-free; five parking spaces for disabled visitors are in front of the building. It is reached step-free from the Auestadion and Park Schönfeld tram stops.
