About this venue

Kampen kirke stands on Thorbjørn Egners plass, between Bøgata and Normannsgata in the Kampen district of Oslo. It was built on ground cleared by the fire that swept the neighbourhood in 1878, to drawings by Jacob Wilhelm Nordan: a three-aisled neo-Gothic brick church with a rafter loft carried on timber columns and a copper-clad tower. Bishop C. P. P. Essendrop consecrated it on 29 November 1882, when it held 800 people; today it seats around 480. The parish runs the building deliberately as a cultural church, with a programme spanning visual art, literature, theatre and music alongside services, baptisms, weddings and funerals. Its best-known strand is Jazz på Kampen, running since 2021 — one Saturday a month with Norwegian and international musicians. The resident Kampenkoret, some twenty singers, gives two concerts a year, and the church has more recently started a listening-session series with the neighbourhood record shop Kampen Vinyl. Musicians rate the acoustics, and the room is used by outside performers and for recording. The instruments are a grand piano, a harpsichord and a digital Viscount organ installed in 2021, which the parish describes as unique in Norway; the original 1899 August Nilsen pipe organ was restored and enlarged several times, most recently in 1999. The interior was refurbished from 2024 with support from Riksantikvaren, and the tower clock restored the same year. Concert bookings and hire go through the parish office in Normannsgata 55.
