About this venue
The Grand Theatre in Lancaster has been in near-continuous use since it opened in 1782, making it one of the oldest working theatres in England and the third oldest in Britain. The Georgian shell survived a fire that gutted the interior in 1908; architect Albert Winstanley's replacement interior, built inside the original stone walls, is what audiences see today.
Grade II listed, the theatre seats 457 across two levels. It has been owned and run since 1951 by Lancaster Footlights, an amateur and semi-professional theatre company that formed in the 1920s and bought the building to save it from demolition. The programme covers live comedy, drama, dance, musicals and family shows, staged by Footlights' own adult, youth and studio groups alongside visiting productions.
