About this venue
The Leerer Beutel was built in 1597/98 as the city's granary and enlarged in 1606/07, taking its name from a smaller store building it replaced. Restored after an architectural competition in 1975/76 and reopened in 1980, the seven-storey building, 54 metres long with exposed timber and stone, is now one of Regensburg's main cultural centres. It houses a historic hall used as a multi-purpose event room and as the concert hall of the Jazzclub Regensburg e.V., the Städtische Galerie im Leeren Beutel with changing and permanent exhibitions of 20th- and 21st-century art, and a cinema and photo hall.
The Jazzclub, with more than 800 members one of the largest jazz clubs in Germany, has played in the building since 1988 and stages most of its concerts there, from established international names to young talent, with a focus on contemporary jazz and regular sessions; Chet Baker, Archie Shepp, Joe Pass and Till Brönner have appeared. The autumn 2026 programme runs from a Miles Davis and John Coltrane centennial quintet to Brazilian jazz, a blues night, funk and big-band evenings. The stage is 5 m wide between the columns (7.5 m behind them) and 3.7 m deep, with a house PA, a Yamaha C3 grand piano, drum kit, amplifiers and a lighting rig.
