A cultural house in Mariboes gate in Oslo, run by Mela, with a focus on the cultures that migration has brought to Norway. MelaSalen takes 350 standing or 150 seated, with a small stage for 50 and an upstairs room for 40; all three are hired out and step-free.

About this venue

Melahuset is a year-round cultural house at Mariboes gate 8 in central Oslo, run by Mela with support from the Ministry of Culture and Equality, Oslo municipality and Kulturrådet. It sets out to give room to the cultures that migration has brought to Norway, and its programme runs from Bollywood nights and Indian classical music to poetry slams, comedy, reggae discos for families and events tied to the Oslo Mela Festival. Three rooms are hired out. MelaSalen is the main hall: 350 standing, 150 seated in rows or 100 at café tables, with a sound system, stage lighting, a projector, microphones and a movable grand piano, a bar and lounge area, natural light, backstage access and several exit routes. Loungen, also called Lille scene, takes 50 café-style for acoustic concerts, intimate performances, talks and lectures, and can be split off from MelaSalen to make a smaller room; it has its own sound, lighting, projector and microphones. MelaUpstairs is on the first floor, reached by lift, and seats 40 in flexible layouts with sound, projector and microphones, sofa seating, a kitchenette and natural light. All three rooms are wheelchair accessible. They take concerts, theatre and dance, seminars, conferences, talks, book launches, poetry evenings, film screenings, debates and DJ and club nights.
