About this venue
The Mitchell Arts Centre, known as the MAC, opened on Broad Street in Hanley in 1957 as a memorial to Spitfire designer Reginald Mitchell. It is run by the charity Mitchell Memorial Youth Arts Centre and programmes theatre, NT Live and film screenings, dance, music, workshops and an annual Christmas pantomime.
The main auditorium seats 316, with full wheelchair access and a small balcony whose flexible seats can be moved to improve accessibility. As well as theatre, it is used for conferences, awards ceremonies and auditions. The meeting room takes up to 45 theatre-style and can be set for theatre, cabaret, classroom or boardroom layouts. A dance studio has full-length mirrors, a sprung floor and portable barres, and the Spitfire Cafe and Bar serves the building. All spaces can be hired, and corporate hire offers free Wi-Fi, catering options and free parking. The auditorium has a gradual slope, and lifts serve the other floors.
