About this venue

Sjøborg kulturhus opened in June 2007 and its cinema followed in October the same year, giving Sunnmøre what the operators called its newest and most complete culture house. It shares a building with the Quality Hotel Ulstein and belongs to Ulstein kultur og konferansesenter A/S, jointly owned by Ulstein municipality and Ulstein hotell A/S; the municipal culture office runs the house and the cinema and handles all hire. Storsalen has two raked seating blocks — 228 seats in the front block and 240 behind — and can be divided so that only the front block is used, giving a more intimate room. With a smaller stage area, roughly 50 chairs fit in front of the front block, bringing the hall to 518 seats. The stage area is about 9 x 16 m on a flat floor, and a stage can be built to whatever height an organiser needs. The hall carries a Meyer M'elodie PA that the house says meets most requirements, with a basic lighting rig that larger productions will want to supplement. Sjøborg kino opened on 12 October 2007 with Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. It seats 119 in a generous, architecturally distinctive room with a modern sound system, and is also used for smaller concerts, theatre and meetings. The house is let for concerts, theatre, meetings, gatherings and other cultural purposes through Ulstein municipality's culture office, which publishes full hire terms. Ticket reservations go through Ulstein Arena on 70 01 77 00, weekdays 08:00-21:00 and weekends 11:00-18:00; the cinema kiosk opens 45 minutes before each screening or event and also sells tickets.
