About this venue
SKOKS — Skeivt Kunst- og Kultursenter — is an independent queer art and culture venue in Oslo, set up to reach across generations, group identities and artistic disciplines and to be a safe meeting place that increases artistic activity and community. It is run as an active volunteer centre, whose "superheroes" keep the doors open so that queer people and allies get free access to queer programming, skills development and social belonging. It is supported by Oslo Kommune, Kulturrådet, Kulturtanken, Kulturrom, Sparebankstiftelsen and Fritt Ord, and a broad coalition of queer organisations stands behind the project.
The centre has taken up residence at Margit Hansens gate 3, a side street off Grønlandsleiret, occupying the whole ground floor of a building with flats above. The premises are modern and flexible, with several rooms hired for cultural events, kick-offs, talks and meetings. The main room is highly adaptable, laid out differently for each event and fitted with a stage rig; day to day it holds seating areas for working or meeting a friend, the centre's bookshop with queer publishers, indie presses and journals, and a community noticeboard. The meeting room is large enough for workshops and network meetings, closed off from outside view and fitted with a whiteboard and a long table. There is a children's corner under an airy tent canopy, and a library — separate from the main room, so parallel activities can run in each — which doubles as a sensory quiet zone and holds the centre's map of censored books. SKOKS also runs the QLUBB programme strand, a Living Archive project and a Banned Books library, and shares its office space with Måken forlag.
Fixed opening hours in 2026 are 17:00–20:00 Monday to Wednesday, plus event days.
There are two entrances, both wheelchair accessible. The main door is the first one in from Grønlandsleiret into Margit Hansens gate; it can be hard to spot the first time, so a pink barrier is put out near Grønlandsleiret during opening hours. A second, more discreet office entrance sits about 100 metres further into Margit Hansens gate towards Rubina Ranas gate and leads straight into the main room. The premises have no steps or thresholds and plenty of space, adjustable lighting in every room, coat hooks and a shoe rack at the door, and two gender-neutral toilets, one of them fully accessible with grab bars and a generous turning circle.
