About this venue
St Barnabas' Church stands at Smithdown Place, where Allerton Road, Smithdown Road and Penny Lane meet, and was built between 1900 and 1914 to designs by the Liverpool architect James Francis Doyle. Paul McCartney sang in its choir. Rebranded as Penny Lane Church, it has been renovated to work as a music venue and community space alongside worship, with a permanent stage, a sound desk, a snack area and pews made removable so the room can be reconfigured.
The church's own programme is its services and community life - Sunday worship at 9.30am, 11.30am and 6pm with a worship band, a Tuesday lunchtime service, a regular Worship Night, Alpha courses and student and newcomer meals. The reconfigurable room has also carried third-party events, including the Good Market, an independent makers' market with live music. The church publishes no room-hire page or rate card and no capacity; enquiries go through the parish office.
