About this venue
The Staatstheater Kassel presents music theatre, drama, dance, concerts and the Junges Staatstheater, and its state orchestra looks back on more than 500 years of history. The opera house and playhouse on Friedrichsplatz date from 1959; the TiF (Theater im Fridericianum), a 99-seat studio with a mobile seating stand entered from the back of the Museum Fridericianum, was added in 1983. Around 500 staff produce about 30 new productions a season.
Diary note: the Opernhaus on Friedrichsplatz is closed for a major renovation, reported in October 2025 as lasting about six years; since the 2025/26 season opera, musical and dance productions play at the INTERIM replacement venue on Ljuba-Senderowna-Straße, listed separately. The Schauspielhaus (517 seats) and the TiF continue to play as normal. When the opera house reopens, its seating and status here should be re-checked.
The opera house has 947 seats, a stage 25 m wide and 15 m deep and a 95 m² orchestra pit. The houses can be hired for corporate events, annual meetings and cultural events when the performance schedule allows. The Opernhaus, Schauspielhaus and TiF have lifts and accessible toilets, assistance dogs are welcome, hearing loops are available and selected performances are signed. The nearest tram stop is Friedrichsplatz.
