About this venue
The building was constructed in 1908 as a storage and workshop facility for Odda Smelteverk, the town's calcium carbide and cyanamide works, and was converted into a public bathhouse for factory workers in 1937. After the smelting works closed in 2003, author Marit Eikemo led a local effort to preserve the building, and it reopened in 2011 as Sentralbadet Litteraturhus — Norway's second dedicated literature house. A 2015 renovation added lift access to the upper floor and improved ventilation. The venue holds regular Thursday "open house" evenings with coffee, books and conversation, alongside author talks, book launches, private gatherings and festivals.
