The Casa is a non-profit bar and social centre on Hope Street, set up by Liverpool dockworkers after their long dispute in the 1990s and run under the stewardship of the Initiative Factory, with a charitable arm in the Waterfront Trust. It serves continental beers, gins and spirits at what it calls honest prices, and it stands in the university and theatre quarter, in sight of both cathedrals.
The main room behind the bar is a real performance space, let for theatre productions, film and documentary screenings, comedy, conferences and political and speaking events as well as parties, weddings and funerals. It accommodates 185 people, or 110 comfortably seated, has its own bar, a screen and projector, step-free access and accessible toilets, and can be laid out to suit the booking. A second, smaller room, the Cellar Bar or Lower Venue, is also let for meetings and conferences; the operator publishes no capacity for it, so it is not listed as a bookable space here.
Alongside the hire business the building hosts the Merseyside Sceptics Society on the third Thursday of every month, and runs the Community Advice Service Association, a membership body founded by the former dockworkers offering free information, advice and guidance on employment and welfare rights. The bar opens Wednesday, Friday and Saturday 11:00 to 23:00, and from 16:00 on the third Thursday; it is otherwise closed unless booked for a function.
