The Central

The Central is a four-storey Grade II listed pub of 1854-56 on the wedge of land between Half Moon Lane and Hills Street in Gateshead town centre, a few minutes from the Tyne Bridge. Its shape has earned it the local nickname "The Coffin". After a period of decline it was bought by the Head of Steam group in 2009, restored at a cost of over a million pounds and reopened in 2010; it is now part of Camerons Brewery's estate.

The interior keeps its circa-1900 Buffet with a carved U-shaped counter, bar back, plasterwork frieze and panelling. Above the public bar are two function rooms used for regular live music - the Blue Room takes bands on Sunday afternoons - plus a rooftop terrace. The pub serves up to 13 handpulled cask ales alongside keg, bottled beers, wines and spirits.
