About this venue
The Literary & Philosophical Society of Newcastle upon Tyne, universally known as the Lit & Phil, was founded in 1793 as a conversation club and opened its purpose-built library on Westgate Road in 1825. It is the largest independent library outside London, holding close to 200,000 books along with a music library of some 10,000 CDs and 10,000 LPs.
Beneath its domed reading rooms the Society runs a year-round public programme of concerts, book launches, lectures, readings and workshops. Events are open to members and non-members alike.
