About this venue

The Swinging Arm is a live music pub at 61-63 Church Street in Birkenhead, a short walk from the Woodside ferry terminal and the Mersey promenade, with the Liverpool waterfront across the water. The building traded as the Royal Hotel from at least 1864; the present pub dates itself to 2001 and bills itself as "the Wirral's home of live music".

It has two stages and puts on free live music four or five nights a week, with bands on Friday and Saturday evenings and a Sunday-afternoon show from 4.30pm. There is a jam night every Monday from 8pm with Blackbeard and Co, a smartphone speed quiz on Thursdays at 8.30pm, and a comedy night on the first Wednesday of each month. Entry to the music is free and the venue is over-18s only.

The programme is rock-led and draws a rock and biker crowd - recent and forthcoming bills include AC/DC, Status Quo, Thin Lizzy and Deep Purple tribute acts, Blondie Ambition, Grunge Heaven and the SAS Blues Band. CAMRA, which lists it as a live music pub, describes it as "a casual quiet boozer by day and a busy venue by night". The bar runs more than ten taps, with a large range of imported German and Belgian beer alongside a changing cask ale.
