From Conversation to Code: How a Technical Nuance Resulted in New Functionality for Festivals
In this instalment of the Under The Hood series, we are picking out some of the gems that arise from the Crescat community to become fully-fledged features for all of our users. This is the “From Conversation to Code” instalment - shining a light on exactly what happens with a user suggestion.
The User: Momentium Festivals
The Spark: Prominent festival promoters like Momentium require secure methods for collecting and handling sensitive data for volunteers.
The Conversation: While using Public Forms for collecting volunteer registrations, the Momentium team pointed out the need for a better way of collecting and handling sensitive data.
The Evolution: We immediately saw that with “private” fields in Public Forms, we weren’t quite fulfilling this need. Not only do large-scale festivals require internal fields to log information about volunteers, they need fields that can be filled and submitted by the Volunteer but only visible to Festival admins and the Volunteers themselves. Therefore, we assessed the requirements and decided upon new functionality that could be used by any Festival making use of Public Forms, not just for Volunteers, but for other use cases such as Vendor applications.
The Result: With Restricted Fields, we have made it easier to manage sensitive data securely for Public Form submissions. Now a form responder can input the sensitive personal data you require such as ID number, bank account numbers etc, while keeping the responses visible only to the festival admins and responders themselves. What’s more, we’ve added an additional layer of security that prevents the responder from accidentally overwriting the data. If they want to edit the data they have inputted, they have to request a secure 60-minute link via email.
The Impact: This feature, born from the technical nuance of data management, is now functionality that all Festivals using Public Forms can make use of, for pretty much any type of data they need to collect.
