What is Backline?

Backline is the band equipment that sits on stage behind the performers, such as guitar and bass amplifiers, drum kits and keyboards, supplied by the artist, venue or a hire company. The name comes from where it stands: in a line at the back of the stage.

How backline works at a show

Who supplies backline depends on the act and the event:

  1. Artist's own: touring acts often bring their own gear, so their sound is the same every night.
  2. Hired: acts flying in, or tours without space for gear, hire backline from a specialist company near each show.
  3. House backline: some venues keep a drum kit and amps for support acts and local bands.
  4. Shared backline: festivals and multi-band bills often provide one set of core gear for several acts to speed up changeovers.

The act lists its needs in the technical rider and shows positions on the stage plot. A backline tech or roadie sets it up, tunes it and looks after it during the show. Festivals confirm each act's backline requests during the advance, which many manage through advances in Crescat.

Backline vs PA

Backline is what the musicians play through on stage. The PA, or mains, is the venue's sound system that carries the whole mix to the audience. Microphones and DI boxes connect the backline to the PA.

Typical backline list for a four-piece band

  • Drum kit: kick, snare, rack and floor toms, hardware and cymbal stands (drummers often bring their own cymbals and snare)
  • Bass amplifier head and speaker cabinet
  • Two guitar amplifiers
  • Stage piano or keyboard with stand
