What is an RFID Wristband?

An RFID wristband is an event wristband with a small chip inside, used to scan people in, control access to areas and, at many festivals, pay for food and drink without cash. RFID stands for radio frequency identification; many event wristbands use NFC, a short-range type of RFID also used in contactless cards. They are now standard at many large festivals.

How RFID wristbands work

An RFID wristband system runs in five steps:

  1. Issue: wristbands are posted to ticket holders or collected on arrival, each linked to a ticket.
  2. Activate: fans register their wristband online, sometimes adding payment details.
  3. Scan in: at the gates, readers check the chip and record entry and exit.
  4. Control access: different wristbands open different areas, such as VIP, backstage or campsites.
  5. Pay: at cashless festivals, the wristband is tapped to pay at bars and stalls.

Wristbands for crew, artists and guests are part of a festival's accreditation, which organisers manage with Crescat for festivals.

RFID wristband vs barcode ticket

A barcode ticket is scanned once at the gate and can be copied. An RFID wristband stays on the wrist for the whole event, is hard to fake and can be scanned many times for re-entry, access and payments.

Benefits of RFID wristbands

  • Faster entry at the gates
  • Harder to forge than paper tickets
  • Real-time data on crowd numbers in each area
  • Different access levels on one system
  • Cashless payments without cards or phones
  • Lost wristbands can be blocked and replaced
  • Fewer staff needed to check tickets by hand

Frequently asked questions

Can an RFID wristband be removed and reused?

Most festival wristbands use a one-way clasp, so cutting or removing them breaks the band and stops it being passed on.

Do RFID wristbands track people?

They record scans at gates and readers, not a person's location everywhere on site. Organisers must handle any personal data in line with data protection law, such as UK GDPR, and explain what they collect.

What happens if I lose my RFID wristband?

Most festivals can block a lost wristband and issue a new one, often after checking ID. Any cashless credit can usually be moved to the new band, which is one advantage over losing cash.
