What is a Radius Clause?

A radius clause (also called a radius restriction) is a contract term that stops an artist playing other shows within a set distance and time period of a booked show, to protect its ticket sales. Festivals use them widely, and so do promoters of large concerts. Clauses that are too broad can limit an artist's touring, so they are often one of the most negotiated parts of a festival offer.

How a radius clause works

A radius clause is agreed and applied in five steps:

  1. Set the terms: the offer sets a distance, such as 50 miles, and a period before and after the show.
  2. Negotiate: the agent pushes for a smaller radius or shorter period.
  3. Agree exceptions: such as small showcases, private events or other shows by the same promoter.
  4. Write it in: the final terms go into the deal memo and contract.
  5. Check when routing: the agent checks the clause before booking other dates nearby.

Radius clauses are a big part of festival booking, which teams manage alongside their line-ups with Crescat for festivals.

Radius clause vs exclusivity

A radius clause limits shows by distance and time. An exclusivity clause is broader, for example stopping an artist announcing other shows in a country until the festival announces them. Many festival contracts include both.

What a radius clause usually covers

  • Distance from the venue or festival site
  • Days or months before the show
  • Days or months after the show
  • Whether public announcements are restricted too
  • Exceptions, such as private or broadcast performances
  • What happens if the clause is broken
  • Whether online or livestreamed shows count

Frequently asked questions

How big is a typical radius clause?

It varies widely. Club shows may use a small radius for a few weeks, while major festivals can ask for hundreds of miles over several months.

Why do promoters want radius clauses?

If an artist plays nearby around the same time, fans may buy that ticket instead. The clause protects the promoter's ticket sales. It also helps a festival keep its line-up feeling exclusive.

Are radius clauses fair to artists?

They can limit an artist's income, and very broad clauses have been criticised and challenged. Agents negotiate to keep them reasonable.
