What is 'Dry Hire'?
In the live events industry, "dry hire" refers to renting a venue space or technical equipment without any supporting venue staff, technicians, catering, or operational services included. The hiring client receives access to the bare physical space or standalone gear and assumes full responsibility for bringing in their own event crew, production equipment, security, and catering services.
For event venues, dry hire offers a "blank canvas" rental model. While the venue typically provides a basic duty manager to oversee building access, safety compliance, and licensing conditions, all creative, technical, and hospitality execution falls strictly on the client or their third-party contractors.
Key Characteristics of Dry Hire
Space or Gear Only: The rental contract covers the room or physical assets alone, with standard house lighting, power, and basic utilities included.
External Staffing: The client must source, manage, and pay their own event managers, sound and lighting engineers, front-of-house staff, caterers, and SIA security personnel.
Lower Direct Venue Costs: Base hire fees are generally lower than wet hire alternatives since the venue does not incur staffing, catering, or specialized operational overheads.
Increased Client Liability: The hiring party bears primary responsibility for risk assessments, equipment setup, event safety, and restoring the space to its original condition post-event.
Operating a dry hire model allows venues to maximise space utilisation with minimal internal staffing requirements, though it requires strict contracts and detailed check-in and check-out procedures to safeguard the facility.
