What is an SIA Licence?
An SIA licence is a licence from the UK's Security Industry Authority that security staff, such as door supervisors, must hold to work legally at licensed venues and many events. It shows the holder has passed approved training and background checks, and must be worn where it can be seen while working. Working without a licence when one is required is a criminal offence, for both the worker and, in some cases, the company that supplies them.
How to get an SIA licence
Getting an SIA licence follows five steps:
- Choose the licence: for events and venues, this is usually the door supervisor licence.
- Train: complete an approved qualification with a training provider, including first aid.
- Apply: apply to the SIA online, with proof of identity and the right to work.
- Pass the checks: the SIA carries out criminality and identity checks.
- Work and renew: wear the licence visibly while working and renew it before it expires.
Security companies need to know who is licensed for each shift, which is why many security services use Crescat to schedule staff.
SIA licence vs steward
An SIA licence is needed for licensable security work, such as guarding, searching and controlling entry at licensed premises. Stewards who only guide and help people usually do not need one. Events must make sure each role is filled by someone with the right licence.
Common SIA licence types
- Door supervisor: venues, bars and most event security
- Security guard: guarding property and sites
- Close protection: protecting individuals, such as artists
- CCTV operator: monitoring cameras
- Key holding and cash transit, for specialist work
