Stage Crew and What They Do
Stage crew, also known as stage hands, event crew or run crew, are essential workers in the live event industry responsible for setting up, running, and dismantling productions such as concerts, theater performances, corporate events, and festivals. Their tasks can include:
- Loading and unloading equipment – Moving gear, instruments, and staging materials in and out of the venue.
- Building and dismantling sets – Assembling stages, rigging lights, and setting up props.
- Lighting and sound setup – Installing and operating lighting, sound, and video equipment.
- Backstage operations – Assisting with quick set changes, managing cables, and ensuring smooth transitions.
- Safety and maintenance – Ensuring equipment is secure and following safety protocols.
Stage crew members work under various specialized roles, such as riggers (who set up overhead equipment), audio engineers, lighting technicians, and stage managers. Their work is often fast-paced, requiring teamwork, technical knowledge, and physical endurance. Festivals, venues and event organizers rely heavily on these technical staff to ensure their operations run smoothly and safely.
It is common for stage crew members to progress to senior roles such as Technical Directors, Venue Managers and Production Managers.
